SMBus I/O Expander Overview |
In
their simplest form, these ICs “expand” the two-wire SMBus to 15 GPIO
(general purpose input/output) pins in W83601R (nine in W83602R). This
provides a board-space efficient solution to address the needs of additional
I/O pins without running a large number of PCB traces from the host to
the I/O devices. These chips also support interrupt output to inform the
host CPU of any input device activity. A special “LED Out” function blinks
a LED driven by the chips at programmable rate (including full-on and
full-off). W83602R can also be configured as an ACPI power controller.

Benefits |
- 3.3V SMBus compliance
- Up to 15 GPIO pins
- Issue interrupt as input events notification
- Output pins can be level or pulse mode
- LED controller with programmable blink rate
- ACPI power management (W83602R only)
|
- Compatible with SMBus hosts
(e.g. most newer “South Bridges”)
- Interrupt is more efficient than polling
- Level/pulse option eases system design
- Ideal for DC power LED indicators; blink rate
can indicate system states
- Power control outputs for ACPI suspend-to-RAM
(STR - W83602R only)
