Winbond
Selected to the WiFi® Alliance WMM™ Power Save Official
Testing Platform
W89C37,
the latest addition to the Winbond Wireless LAN Solutions
demonstrates the newest QoS features in the interoperability compliance
San
Jose, Ca., December 7th, 2005 - Continuing its drive as
a technology provider into the rapidly growing WLAN products arena,
Winbond Electronics Corporation is proud to announce the W89C37
as its latest member of the WinFi™ family of WLAN products.
The W89C37 has received the WMM™ Power Save certification
by the WiFi® Alliance thanks to the new features of its latest
generation MAC and baseband IC . As a successful participant of
WiFi® Alliance plugfests, Winbond has also been selected as
a client station in the WMM™ Power Save interoperability test-
bed configurations.
This is
an important milestone for a multi-faceted semiconductor company
like Winbond. As the company successes in the PC, Consumer and Mobile
electronics markets continue, Winbond's standard-setting Wireless
LAN products are becoming indispensable ingredients for system developers.
Recognizing
the importance of battery life in portable electronics applications,
the addition of WMM™ Power Save in the W89C37 enables Winbond
to continue its quest of power efficiency while maintaining high
throughput wireless links. Along with other Alliance members, Winbond
believes that the Power Save extensions to WMM™ base certification
ensures an interoperable way to reduce power consumption without
compromising the QoS data flow requested by the application session.
Winbond
will also continue to broaden its software portfolio by extending
its support to the latest chips. The company will provide software
packages not only for PC applications but also for embedded system
environments serving consumer electronics products. The OS environments
supported are:
- Windows XP and
earlier versions of Windows Operating Systems
- Windows XP Professional
x64 Edition supporting 64-bit x86 CPUs
- Windows CE 5.0
and earlier versions
- Linux 2.6 and earlier
versions
While maintaining
pin-to-pin compatibility with the W89C33, the prior generation MAC
plus baseband IC , the key features added by the W89C37 are:
- IEEE 802.11e known
as QoS
- IEEE 802.11h known
as Dynamic Frequency Selection and Transmit Power Control
- IEEE 802.11d known
as Additional Regulatory Domains
- Wireless Distribution
System / Wireless Bridge for Soft AP applications.

Along the
W89C37, Winbond has also announced the mass production of its first
RF transceiver the W89RF242. Built in pure CMOS technology, the
2.4GHz direct conversion transceiver eliminates IF stages and external
SAW filter. Such features make it an exceptional match for building
inexpensive 802.11bg WLAN solutions with any of the W89C3x as a
companion.
