San Jose, CA, Sept.
30, 2003 — Winbond Electronics Corporation America, a leading
supplier of semiconductor solutions to the consumer, computer, communications
and electronics products markets, today announced that it has launched
a new on-line demo for its WTS701 text-to-speech (TTS) single chip processor
technology. The demo, which is available on www.winbond-usa.com,
allows viewers to type in any line of text and listen to the text converted
into female Mandarin speech. It is the second on-line demo that Winbond
America has launched; the first, female English, was introduced in March
of this year. Both demos are now on-line, allowing users to test the
TTS capabilities of either English or Mandarin.
The on-line demo is based on Winbond’s TTS processor technology.
It utilizes the same algorithm, code space and voice module as Winbond’s
TTS single-chip solution, thereby generating speech output that approximates
the original sound generated by the WTS701 TTS processor. It allows
any one with a computer, soundcard and speakers or headphones to type
in any Mandarin words or phrases and to hear them converted to speech.
Users should also have a .WAV file player installed on their system
to enable playback of the .WAV file generated by the demo.
“This new demo showcases the expanding language capabilities of Winbond’s
TTS technology,” said Peter Himes, vice president marketing, Winbond
America. “TTS technology is now proliferating throughout a number
of applications, enabling designers the luxury of adding this feature
to a wide variety of consumer and electronic applications.”
Winbond’s WTS701 is the industry’s first single chip processor that
converts Text-To-Speech (TTS). The WTS701 creates a more natural human
sounding speech by converting text to speech using recorded human
speech samples. This ensures that the output is a recognizable human
voice, unlike computer-generated synthesis solutions. The chip uses
a concatenation algorithm combined with Winbond’s proprietary Multi-Level
Storage (MLS) technology. It contains two memory arrays; one for the
acoustic library and one for the processor program, enabling application-specific
customization for special characters such as SMS icons or chat emoticons.
The chip is offered in female and male English and female Mandarin.
All options are currently shipping in volume quantities.
