Taipei, Taiwan, June 13, 2007 — Winbond Electronics Corporation [TSE: 2344, www.winbond.com] introduces a range of new SideShow-enabled concept devices, created using Winbond controllers and prototyped by Ricavision® for Microsoft, wirelessly connected to a PC. The Chatter, a small handheld portable device with thumb keyboard, allows the user to respond to emails and instant messages. The Scribbler, a small device with an electronic "sticky note" function, is easily attached to a kitchen refrigerator or similar appliances. The Reader offers a convenient way to read documents and electronic books, together with all the benefits of SideShow.
Winbond's presence at the 2007 WinHEC show in Taipei is an expression of the company's continued support of the SideShow feature of Windows Vista. Winbond's drive for innovative solutions, exploiting a broad portfolio of in-house technologies, has created a line of new applications based on its advanced controller for SideShow (WPCE521L) and associated firmware. These applications, working with Windows Vista, create new features that greatly enhance the user's “information touch” experience.
SideShow-compatible solutions enable users to interact with Windows Vista using “gadgets”. Winbond’s range of SideShow-enabled devices communicate with the host system through wired USB or a wireless channel, using a wide range of input possibilities. These devices come in various shapes and sizes with displays, offering touch capability, from a tiny 2.5"QVGA up to a full-size SVGA LCM, or new Electronic Paper Display (EPD) with extremely low power consumption. "We leverage Winbond's position as a major supplier of PC components and solutions, and our long experience in working with all the leading OEMs and ODMs, to provide our customers with a portfolio of SideShow-compatible solutions and applications that complement and differentiate their products." said Zeev Heller, Senior Director of Marketing for Winbond, "By working together with Microsoft we were able to define and design these new applications to fully comply with the Windows SideShow concept and exploit all its benefits. Our strategic relations with Microsoft result in new concepts and solutions that benefit our customers".
“The combination of Winbond's controller for SideShow with the Windows SideShow technology adds exciting possibilities for Windows Vista users,” said Dan Polivy, program manager for Windows SideShow at Microsoft Corp. “The Winbond controller for SideShow will help Microsoft develop and demonstrate new SideShow concept solutions.”
